These youngsters used to speak in Russian all the time, like most young people in urban Ukraine. Ukrainian was just one of the subjects at school, and seen as a bit old-fashioned or rural.   1. P.S. They spoke naturally in Russian when they were interviewed before the war. But now, they consciously chose to speak in Ukrainian, in which they occasionally made Russian-influenced mistakes, and corrected each other.
